Position: Radio Communications Technician

Job Description:
The North American Center for Emergency Communications Inc., (NACEC) is a provider of emergency radio communications
on a national and international basis. Our offices are currently located in Northeastern Minnesota. This is a
full time staff position and a member of our disaster response team, so global travel is required.
The Radio Communications Technician is responsible for the setup, test, maintenance and repair of all
communications equipment owned by this organization, including the equipment to be deployed to large
scale disaster operations. This includes but is not limited to hardwired telephone, HF, VHF, UHF and
Microwave, standard and trunked radio systems for voice and data
communications and all related equipment.
When deployed as part of a disaster response field team, the technician will install, maintain and service the
radio communications systems our organization provides. The technician will also be responsible to hand receipt,
program and issue the fixed, mobile and handheld radio equipment provided to the NGOs. The technician will
work with the NGOs and other organizations within the disaster area to assist them in operating and managing
the two-way radio communications resources that we provide.
The technician must have solid electronics and radio repair skills and a thorough understanding of radio theory. At minimum a two-year degree in electronics and at least 5 years experience as a radio
communications technician.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Extensive command of base stations, repeaters, antenna systems, and towers;
- Understands FCC licensing requirements;
- Knowledge of telephone systems both wired and cellular;
- Good computer skills including basic networking;
- Solid project management skills, with effective communication skills both written and verbal;
- Strong technical writing skills;
- Detail orientated with strong follow-through and ability to work in high profile, complex environments.
- The ability to work and live in harsh conditions found in areas hit by large scale disasters for as long as 3 month at a time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High school diploma PLUS an associates or equivalent two-year technical degree in electronics.
Experience: Five or more years of two-way radio design, installation and troubleshooting experience.
Trade Licenses & Certificates: Candidates must possess an FCC GROL license or equivalent.
Other Licenses: A valid drivers license is required for this position.
Passport: Candidate must possess a valid passport.
Drug Screening: Candidates must pass a drug-screening test.

- The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
- Work involves some tower climbing which requires good balance and no fear of heights.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and see colors.
- The employee may be required to push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 60 pounds and up to 120 pounds for short distances.
- The noise levels in the work environments are usually moderately quiet however they can temporarily become loud enough to require ear protection.
