| Update for June & July 2010 |
Well June and July were very busy months around here. During the last 2 months we have seen continued growth.
Volunteers:
We have greatly expanded the number of volunteers working with the project. I would like to thank all of the volunteers that have come onboard from Northeastern Minnesota’s Iron Range. They have been given the name “Iron Range Volunteers”.
Volunteer Drive (National):
We have restarted our national drive to find both technical and non-technical community minded volunteers. Eventually I would like to see NACEC’s volunteer base grow to include one or more volunteers in almost every community across the country. This will help us better serve the needs of their communities should a large disaster occur. Even though they may or may not be an active part of our disaster response team, they can play a very important role by helping speed up our field teams ability to find key people and locations within their communities.
Volunteer Activity:
The Iron Range Volunteers were busy in July helping to conduct 2 fundraisers here on Minnesota’s Iron Range. The first event was NACEC’s First Annual Gilbert Pancake Breakfast held on the 3rd. About 230 meals were served and about 14 corporate sponsors came forward to help. A much smaller event a Chilidog Feed was held at the Aurora Minnesota farmers market on the 29th. Both events were big helps in getting information about NACEC out to those living in the communities where they were held. Congratulations to the Iron Range Volunteers for doing such a wonderful job.
Upcoming Events:
Now Something Outdoors and Fun For All Ages!
The fund raising event now being planned is the NACEC 50/100. These are two snowmobile tours to be held on January 15th 2011. For those that want to go on a shorter half day trip there is the 50-mile tour through the forest and lakes of Northeastern Minnesota. For those that want a full day trip there is the 100-mile tour. Both tours will start on the 15th in Gilbert, Minnesota, with the day trip leaving in the morning, and the half-day trip leaving in the early afternoon. The trips will conclude in Gilbert with a dinner, prizes and drawings. We have yet to determine who the celebrities will be that will be accompanying us on the tours. At this point, it looks like we will be able to accommodate about 250 snowmobiles for this event. It’s to early to determine the participation fee, and registration will be on-line so that we can closely track the number of participants. We do expect to offer snowmobile club discounts to those clubs that are sponsoring multiple participants.
Watch our upcoming events page for further details as they are received.
Board of Directors:
Two new members have been added to our Board of Directors.
Mr. Tim Carlson a company owner with a background in management, graphics and computer programming. Tim brings fresh views and ideas to the project.
Mr. Jack Markasich a retired radio communications & electronics technician has many years of experience in this organizations primary areas of activity.
We would like to welcome both of them to our Board of Directors and thank them for their time, service, input and guidance.
Advisory Board
We have started building an Advisory Board to provide assistance and input on those areas and issues that are outside the normal are of expertise of our staff.
We would like to welcome Laura Ackman as the first member of our Advisory Board. Laura is willing to share her strengths in large facility management and administration. She is the senior administrator of a non-profit health care facility with hundreds of employees and dozens of volunteers. Her input will be vitally important to NACEC as it grows and becomes operational.
Staff:
Our search for qualified staff is ongoing.
The Radio Communication Technician positions have not yet been filled as we continue to review the resumes that come in.
We are now looking to hire an Executive Secretary that will take over a lot of the general day-to-day communications and office tasks that need to be done. A posting for this position may soon be made available on the careers page of our website, unless the position is filled quickly.
Grant Writing:
We are still working on grants, but they are time consuming. Grants are awarded from months to a year or more from the time the request letter and paperwork is submitted. So work continues in this area and looks promising.
